I walked on the trail behind the house this afternoon. It was the first time I’d been back there since the storm on Monday. I had gone out for a bit a few days ago but realized my boots were too short for the snow. And my legs weren’t up for the challenge. Today I felt like I had it in me to push through. And I had better boots.

There were no human tracks so I know I was the first one up there since the storm. There were so many deer tracks, but even more coyote tracks. Once I got up to the higher elevation, it was very easy to see where this coyote family hangs out. Tracks in and out of the woods. Multiple tracks on the trail. Blood in the snow along their tracks. Rabbit, maybe? Likely, as I saw some rabbit tracks as well.

It is just amazingly eye opening when the snow displays what actually goes on in the woods without us. I always get a little freaked out at first. But then I remind myself, they were always there, I just wasn’t aware of it. And when they were always there, I felt safe and at home. This is no different. And it makes me feel better to say to them, in my head, I’m friendly and I’m just here to enjoy your home. Thank you.

I read this today:
