Leading lady

We went out on a little family shopping trip to the mall today. New sneakers for Wes and Charlie. A young guy working in the hip sneaker shop told me he liked my sneakers. He said he hadn’t seen any like those. I’m pretty sure unique is cool in the world of sneakers. Afterwards, I told Charlie what he said to me. I really thought it would make me officially cool. Charlie said, Mom he’s a sales person. It’s his job to say nice things to you so you buy stuff in his store. Well, shit.

When I was driving home, I remembered one of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies – The Holiday. Kate Winslet’s character meets a kind older gentleman who used to write movies in the early days of Hollywood. Her character, Iris, is having guy trouble and he says this to her – Iris, in the movies we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you’re behaving like the best friend. She then says, You’re so right. You’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life for God’s sake!

Let’s be the leading lady (or leading man) in our own lives. Maybe that’s the way it was always meant to be.

Thanks for reading today’s entry in my daily blog.  My goal here is to practice noticing. I try to write about small things and I try to keep it light. Sometimes I write about creativity or healing. And sometimes I write about my dogs or what I cooked for dinner. Writing daily here is a way for me to shine a light back on my life and help me see.
